Hypoglycemia Across the LIfespan Part 2: Older Adults
Hypoglycemia is a serious event and affects those of all ages living with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. In the older adult, many factors contribute to a higher risk of hypoglycemia and these episodes often go unrecognized. In 2011, people with diabetes who were over the age of 65 accounted for 48% of all hospitalizations for hypoglycemia. Individuals over 80 years old were 2.5 times more likely to end up in the emergency department and 4.9 times more likely to be hospitalized than younger adults. Recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia are associated with physical and cognitive dysfunction leading to increased frailty and disability. Join Kathy Warwick, RDN, CDCES as she discusses identifying hypoglycemia risk factors and how RDNs, CDCESs, and NDTRs play an important role in prevention and treatment.
