Optimizing Nutrition in Adult Hemodialysis – Part I: Navigating Nutritional Hurdles in Hemodialysis Care Webinar

This presentation will focus on the key nutritional concerns for adults with CKD stage 5D receiving maintenance hemodialysis, including protein-energy wasting (PEW), fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and nutrient deficiencies. It will explore the complex relationship between PEW, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and mortality, highlighting the impact of these factors on patient outcomes. Additionally, the pathophysiology and management of CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) will be reviewed, including current therapeutic approaches to control phosphate, calcium, and vitamin D levels to improve patient care.

After completing this continuing education course the learner should be able to:

Melissa Mroz-Planells, DCN, RDN

Melissa Mroz-Plannells, DCN, RDN is an adjunct professor at Benedictine University, owns a private practice in Chicago and Seattle, and is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (Academy) Renal Dietitians dietetic practice group. She has written book chapters and has researched quality of life and malnutrition in chronic kidney disease. Prest has served in leadership roles with the Chicago and Illinois Academies, Greater Seattle Dietetic Association, NW Renal RD, the National Kidney Foundation, and the Illinois Council on Renal Nutrition. She graduated from Bradley University, earned a master’s degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and a doctorate from Rutgers University.
