This webinar will empower nutrition professionals to better understand their role in the monitoring and care of older adults using incretin therapies.

Live webinar September 17 from 2-3 PM ET

Currently in the U.S., older adults are the fastest growing segment of the population and more than 40% are living with BMI-defined obesity. Historically, intensive lifestyle interventions have demonstrated a 5-10% weight loss with positive effects on physical function and improved quality of life. But long-term weight maintenance has proven to be challenging in all age groups. Additionally, Medicare covers intensive behavior therapy for obesity but this benefit is rarely used.

As of July 1, 2026, Medicare is covering GLP1 Therapy for Medicare recipients who meet certain criteria. Newer incretin-based medications offer the potential of greater weight loss and reduction in health risks related to chronic conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Older adults are an extremely heterogenous population and therefore require careful assessment before undertaking any weight loss program. While these incretin-based therapies have promise, are they appropriate for older adults?

In this webinar, Kathy Warwick, RDN, LDN, CDCES will discuss the benefits and risks of these medications for older adults and the importance of the role of the RDN in their monitoring and care.

  • Discuss the mechanism of action for incretin therapies and their indication and efficacy.
  • Identify potential risks and benefits of these medications in the older adult population.
  • Define the RDN’s role in monitoring and management of the older adult who is being treated with an incretin medication.
