Adults receiving maintenance hemodialysis face complex and evolving nutrition needs that directly impact clinical outcomes, quality of life, and survival. This presentation provides a practical and evidence-based overview of nutrition care for this population, emphasizing the implementation of the 2020 KDOQI Clinical Practice Guideline for Nutrition in CKD. Participants will review key nutrient requirements, learn how to assess nutritional status using validated tools, and explore strategies to manage common barriers to adequate intake. Case-based examples will highlight how to translate guideline recommendations into individualized, patient-centered care plans

After completing this continuing education course the learner should be able to:

  1. Know the key nutrition needs of adults undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
  2. Understand the 2020 KDOQI Clinical Practice Guideline for nutrition in chronic kidney disease, with a focus on patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis.
  3. Apply evidence-based strategies from the 2020 KDOQI guidelines to deliver individualized nutrition care in clinical practice.
  4. Assess nutritional status using practical tools and laboratory indicators relevant to the dialysis population.

Melissa Mroz-Planells, DCN, RDN

Melissa Mroz-Plannells, DCN, RDN is an adjunct professor at Benedictine University, owns a private practice in Chicago and Seattle, and is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (Academy) Renal Dietitians dietetic practice group. She has written book chapters and has researched quality of life and malnutrition in chronic kidney disease. Prest has served in leadership roles with the Chicago and Illinois Academies, Greater Seattle Dietetic Association, NW Renal RD, the National Kidney Foundation, and the Illinois Council on Renal Nutrition. She graduated from Bradley University, earned a master’s degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and a doctorate from Rutgers University.
