Becky’s Note for September

Joyful woman walking amongst sunflowers

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an observance that is near and dear to my heart. This yearly event not only raises awareness of Alzheimer’s, but also combats the stigma around dementia—something that can be so difficult for the families of those who are suffering. My mother suffered from dementia for many years, and I now understand completely why they call it “the long goodbye”. It’s a heartbreaking condition, but you learn to focus on all the positives along the way. It’s essential to remember that people with Alzheimer’s or dementia have valid thoughts and feelings, and we should honor their wishes as much as possible while keeping them safe, cherishing them and helping them maintain their identity, dignity and self-worth. Most of all, remember that as the disease progresses, they tend to live in the moment. So do your best to create as much joy as possible in each moment! You will treasure those joyful memories for a lifetime.

Of course all of September’s focus topics put the spotlight on the need for better nutrition. Alzheimer’s prevention methods center around healthy foods that support cognitive function. COVID-19 updates suggest dietary changes and supplements can increase the body’s ability to fight infection. Malnutrition Awareness Month puts the focus on a need for nutrition education and getting more nutrient-rich foods to those struggling with malnutrition.

Diet is at the center of numerous issues, and as nutrition professionals we have the toolset to make a difference! What will you do to encourage change? Please feel free to email me at info@beckydorner.com to share comments or questions.

P.S. The new 2021 Diet and Nutrition Care Manual is available for purchase! Join thousands of health care facilities nationwide that use our manual to guide nutrition care and menu choices. In addition, you can save on webinars when you bundle—and then decide which topics you’re interested in later.

Warmest Regards,

Becky
