The International Dysphagia Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) has been endorsed for May 2019 implementation in the United States. This webinar will describe what this means regarding “best practice” expectations from key professional organizations and regulatory agencies for long term care. A discussion of the IDDSI framework overview along with recommended steps in team collaboration for successful transition/implementation will be provided.
After attending this session attendees will be able to:
- Identify recommendations and regulatory requirements from key professional organizations and government for IDDSI implementation in the US
- Describe the IDDSI framework and recommendations for transitioning dysphagia programs.
- Discuss team collaboration and resources to assist in successful implementation.

Brenda Richardson, MA, RDN, LD, CD is president of Brenda Richardson, MA, RDN, LD, CD, LLC. She is a well-known leader in the field of dietetics, a nationally acclaimed speaker, author, LTC nutrition-legal expert and consultant to health care providers. She conducts nationwide nutrition seminars for clinical nutrition and food service professionals, and provides crisis management consultation in LTC facilities having Level G and Serious and Immediate Jeopardy citations in Nutrition and Hydration.
Brenda has been very active in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as past chair of DHCC and the Academy Political Action Committee; she served on the Academy Positions Committee, IMPACT ACT Task Force and CMS Workgroup; and currently serves on the Finance and Audit Committee.

Karen Sheffler, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S has over 20 years of experience as a medical speech-language pathologist, specializing in dysphagia since 1995, when she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She obtained her Board Certification as a Swallowing Specialist in 2012. In 2014, she started SwallowStudy.com, which is a dysphagia resource for patients and professionals. Karen has worked in acute care, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and home health care. She currently works at two different hospitals in the Boston area, owns her own dysphagia consulting business, performs peer reviews and presentations, and provides dysphagia expert services to companies and law firms. She has been awarded the ASHA Award for Continuing Education 5 times. She is an active member of ASHA, the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders, and the Dysphagia Research Society.
