Use the RAI correctly and effectively for providing appropriate care with this self-study course!

This course is based on The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 Resident Assessment Instruments (RAI) Manual v1.17 October 1, 2019 revision, which is a document used for implementing standardized assessment for facility care management in nursing homes and non-critical access hospital swing beds. The purpose of the manual is to offer clear guidance about how to use the RAI correctly and effectively for providing appropriate care, which in term will be used in creating and individualized care plan. It also assists in tracking changes in the resident’s status, evaluating goals, and revising their care plan.

The RAI provides assessments for each long-term care facility resident in functional capabilities and helps staff to identify health problems. The assessment is performed on every resident in a Medicare and/or Medicaid-certified long-term care facility. The MDS 3.0 tool includes residents in the assessment process and focuses on standardized protocols.

The MDS is a set of screening, clinical and functional status elements using common definitions and coding strategies, which creates the foundation of a comprehensive assessment for all residents certified to participate in Medicare or Medicaid in nursing homes.

The CAA Process is designed to assist in interpreting the MDS collected data by triggering associated care areas. Once an area triggers, providers use current and evidenced-based clinical resources to assess the potential problem and need to care plan for it. The CAA process helps the provider to focus on the key issues identified in the assessment process to determine how to intervene.

The MDS Assessment data is used to calculate the resident’s Patient Drive Payment Model (PDPM) classification for payment. Coding Section K of the MDS accurately will affect the PDPM score including parenteral IV feeding and fluids and tube feedings. Malnutrition also is captured using this system under NTA comorbidity score calculation.

Note: The MDS manual has not transitioned to the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation (IDDSI) terminology, so this CPE program does not use IDDSI terminology.

The course includes case study-based questions to assess knowledge and understanding of content and require the learner to apply the information as if implementing it in practice.

Purchasing Options: This is available as eDocument plus CPE Test only. Includes a link to the required reading in the course document, electronic test, and 1 certificate with passing grade.

Required Reading for this Course: The MDS is a robust tool for implementing standardized assessment and for facilitating care management in nursing homes and non-critical access hospital swing beds. MDS 3.0 has been designed to improve reliability, accuracy and usefulness of the MDS by including the resident in the assessment process and uses standardized protocols. The MDS 3.0 RAI Manual v1.17 contains updated information related to the Patient Drive Payment Model, includes additional an additional Appendix for MDS and RAI contacts, and separates information for skilled nursing facility and swing beds. Most importantly, it contains clarifications and scenarios concerning complex areas.
