Presented by Zaneta M. Pronsky, MS, RD, FADA and Dean Elbe BSc (Pharm), BCCP

The presentation will review the basics of pharmacokinetics with examples of the effect of food on medication absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. Conversely the effects of medication on food and nutrient absorption, metabolism and excretion will be discussed. Modification of medication action and the enhanced and competitive effects of food and medication actions will be presented. Medication that affect nutritional status are delineated. The presentation provides practical approaches to prevention and diagnosis of food-medication interactions. Patient counseling, assessment and medical nutrition therapy are discussed.

Participants will:
1. Describe at least three ways that food can alter the pharmacokinetics of medications.
2. Explain at least three ways that medication can alter the kinetics of nutrients.
3. Identify the mechanisms by which medication action is altered by nutrients.
4. List pharmacologic effects of medication that adversely affect nutritional status.
5. State specific information to provide to patients about food drug interactions.
6. Describe assessment of nutritional problems to determine possible interactions.
7. Identify MNT for specific medication side effects which affect nutritional status.
8. List practical ways to apply this information in their professional settings.
