Just one more bite! Have you heard yourself or one of your staff coaxing a resident to eat or drink? At the end of life with palliative care patients, sometimes it takes more than a little coaxing. There may be complex social, psychological or physical issues that need to be addressed in order for a resident to accept food and fluids. Or it may be that a patient truly cannot tolerate food and fluid or has not desire to eat. This can be difficult for loved ones to deal with. Should a tube feeding or IV be placed? What are liability issues? What about advanced directives? How do you know if you are doing the right thing?

Participants will:
1. Understand the importance of advance directives and living wills for nutrition/hydration needs
2. Apply practical standards for development of protocols for nutrition/hydration at end of life
3. Implement procedures for assessing and intervening for various pain management effects (nutritional implications of pain and the medications used to treat pain)
4. Apply comfort care measures for nutrition/hydration
5. Learn to assess the social and psychological aspects of nutrition care (sometimes the needs and desires of a patient are the underlying message to nutritional complaints)
6. Discuss how to address ethical issues for end of life nutrition/hydrationers
