In the older population, approximately 18.3% of all people over 60 years of age have diabetes, with approximately half of all cases occurring after the age of 55. The diagnosis of diabetes can impair the quality of life of an older diabetic. This program allows the learner to gain the knowledge needed to implement successful nutrition and diet management of the older diabetic. The learner is provided with tools that will help to determine appropriate nutrition management, including information on current research based practice related to the care of the older diabetic. The program covers: how to identify the risks of unmanaged diabetes, when it is appropriate to be more aggressive with preventative interventions, how to apply the primary goals of medical nutrition therapy for older diabetics including how to adequately calculate nutritional needs, how to apply the philosophy of liberalized diets for older diabetics in long term care, how to handle specific needs such as hypo/hyper-glycemia, clear liquid diets, meal replacements and enteral feedings, and basic information on oral medications and insulin therapy.
