C-difficile (C-diff) is an anaerobic spore-forming bacterium that causes diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions. C-diff is one of the chief causes of hospital-acquired diarrhea in the U.S. It is responsible for approximately three million cases per year of diarrhea and colitis, and more than $1.1 billion in health care costs. Estimates indicate that approximately 13% of those with hospital stays up to two weeks and 50% of people with hospital stays of greater than four weeks aquire C-diff. Hospital stays for C-diff patients are 3.6 days longer and accompanied by an extra cost of $3699.
Participants will:
1. Understand the etiology and symptoms of Clostridium Difficile (C-diff)
2. Define the basic treatments and precautionary measures for C-diff
3. Understand the evidence behind the use of probiotics and prebiotics for the treatment of C-diff and C-diff related diarrhea
