Health and Human Services (HHS) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled a new consumer Web site designed to help consumers and families get the most up to date information on food safety and food recalls on one website. It features preventive tips on how to handle food safely, alerts on life-saving food recalls, and the latest important news.

Quality First: Improvements in Quality of Care in Nursing Homes
The American Health Care Association (AHCA) and the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care (Alliance) released the first comprehensive report examining quality trends in the nation’s nursing homes. Measurable improvements include: decline in number of pressure ulcers, improvements in key clinical areas such as weight loss, dehydration and levels of patient activity and pain management.

Higher Doses of Vitamin D Help Prevent Falls
Seniors aged 65 and older can significantly reduce their risk of falls by taking vitamin D supplements every day…Vitamin D supplements of between 700 and 1,000 IU taken daily are associated with at least a 19% reduction in the risk of falls, they discovered. Vitamin D3 proved even more potent, reducing the risk of falls by 26%.

CMS Quality Indicator Survey (QIS) Process Webcast
On October 23 CMS will broadcast a live presentation to increase participant understanding of the QIS process for surveying nursing facilities. This live presentation will include pre-taped segments from CMS-CO and field experts.
