This memorandum clarifies the intent of Tag F 371 “Procure food from approved sources” related to foods accepted by residents from visitors, family, friends, or other guests; and Residents’ right to choose to accept those foods under F 242 Self Determination and Participation.

H1N1 Virus Outbreak a Pandemic
The World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 on June 11, 2009, indicating that a global pandemic is underway. More than 70 countries are now reporting cases of H1N1 flu. Many of the cases reportedly had links to travel or were localized outbreaks.

Vitamin D — New Perspectives in Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Practice

for adequate calcium absorption and bone health, think again. If you assume that few patients are vitamin D deficient because the body stores it, think again. New Reports Show Weak Progress on Health Quality
For the sixth year in a row, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has produced the National Healthcare Quality Report (NHQR) and the National Healthcare Dispariities Report (NHDR). These reports measure trends in effectiveness of care, patient safety, timeliness of care, patient centeredenss, and efficiency of care. The reports present, in chart form, the latest available findings on quality of and access to health care.

Consumer and Workforce Satisfaction in Nursing Homes
My InnerView released results of a 2008 Survey of 5,075 nursing facilities in the US to assess Consumer and Workforce Satisfaction. 85% of consumers report their satisfaction as either “excellent” or “good,” while 66% of care staff say their facility is an “excellent” or “good” place to work.
