Body Mass Index
The body mass index (BMI) can be utilized as an indicator weight status and health based on a weight for height measurement. BMI is only one of many factors that is used to indicate disease risk. A dietetics professional can provide appropriate nutritional interventions for clients with low or declining BMI, or clients with BMI over 30.
BMI is determined
utilizing the following formula:
BMI = weight (lbs)/height (inches squared) X 705
OR
BMI = weight (kg)/height (meters squared)
* Current weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters
* To use our BMI Calculator, please enter Height in inches, Weight in lbs, and click the Calculate button.
* The BMI Calculator is accurate when the given Height is within 56" to 75" and the given Weight is within 60 to 443 lbs.
BMI Ranges for Older Adults:
* 19 or less indicates underweight and a possible nutritional depletion. Lower BMI is considered detrimental to the older adult due to association with declining nutrition status, pressure ulcers, infections and other complications.
* A healthful range for BMI in people over 60 years of age is 22-27. However, in frail older adults, the Center of Medicare/Medicaid Services has chosen to use 19-27 as the range.
* 30 or above indicates obesity.
* Higher BMI is associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and other health problems. Generally, the higher the BMI, the more health risks are associated. A BMI of 30 or greater may increase risk of death from any cause by 50-150% according to some sources. Individuals should consult their doctor and/or dietetics professional before beginning any weight loss plan.
